What a week! Pouring rain, high winds and dark nights are drawing in. It’s a sign that Autumn is well and truly underway, which I’m pretty glad about; I’m not really a sun-seeker or a fan of all this hot weather. There are few things I enjoy more than spending a rainy afternoon lost in a good book.

I signed up for Dewey’s 24 hour Read-a-thon on October 18th. I’m really looking forward to this event as it will be the first time I’ve participated. I doubt I’ll be able to manage the full 24 hours, but I’m going to read as much as I can during the day. I’ve been thinking about the best way to document my progress throughout the event. I have a couple of ideas, but will probably opt for one master post which I’ll update regularly.

Books That Have Caught My Eye This Week (Must find out more):

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch – The lovely cover was the first thing to catch my eye.  I saw it appearing on a few book blogs and wanted to find out more.  The story sounds really enjoyable too, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for this book when it hits the shelves.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl – Everything about this sounds intriguing.  I’ve checked the library catalogue and there copies in stock, so I think I’ll put in a request (once I’ve read maybe one or two more books that I already have on loan!).

The Incarnations by Susan Barker – I saw the cover for this book on Twitter and spent a while just looking at the great detail and illustration within that main picture.  Reading the blurb the book reminded me of 1Q84, which I really liked, so I can see myself reading this at some stage.

It feels like so long since I made a Sunday post, yet I’ve only been offline for a week, so it’s not really that long, but doesn’t time fly?
So many days, so many new books have caught my attention, and so many more bookish events are coming up.
Also, FINALLY Autumn is starting to feel like Autumn. It’s much cooler, which is great news.

Dewey’s 24 hour Read-a-thon is coming up on October 18th. I didn’t know whether to sign up as I wasn’t sure how much I would be able to commit to reading, but when I looked into the time differences I believe the official start time for the UK is 1pm. I might give it a go as I’ve never participated in a pretty short event before and it would be a new challenge.

I’ve also been looking around for other read-a-thons to join in with, and am thinking at some point of trying to make some kind of master post with as many events as I can find listed, so that I don’t miss out on anything. (If anyone knows of such a list already in existence please do let me know!).

I’ve seen a Review-a-Thon event too, which I think I’ll have to sign up for next month if I don’t start catching up on my reviews soon.

New To My Shelves This Week:

 

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion – I was inspired to get this book when I noticed a comment on someone’s blog saying their library had a request list of well over 300 people! ‘What is this much-sought-after book I’m missing out on?’, I wondered to myself.  Now I can find out.

The Handsome Man’s De Luxe Café by Alexander McCall Smith – I do love The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, so I’m really looking forward to this.

The Taxidermist’s Daughter by Kate Mosse – Another one I’m excited about as I’ve read most of Mosse’s other books and always enjoyed them.

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen – I decided to treat my Kindle to a new book, and I’ve been wanting to read this one for a while, so was pleased when it came up on a price drop website.

The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters – Absolutely loved this book, it was brilliant.

Books That Have Caught My Eye This Week (Must find out more):

Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith – Okay, so it’s not strictly a book to read, but I saw this whilst book shopping a few days ago and couldn’t help but have a look inside. It features ways to encourage you to be creative in the destruction of the pages and the book itself. Very unique, and I would imagine it’s great for relieving stress.
The only problem is, I’m a person who’s totally the opposite to everything this book encourages – I like shiny new covers, and pristine pages which I try to keep in good condition, so who knows how I would tackle this kind of project? It’s an interesting idea though.

The Monogram Murders by Sophie Hannah – I recently decided the time has come to try my first Agatha Christie, as somehow I’ve missed out until now, so, with that in mind my attention was caught when I saw this book on the bookshop shelf, and I would love to read this alongside some of the original Christie novels.

Suspicion by Alexandra Monir  – I keep coming across this really eye-catching book cover when I visit other book blogs, and I’ve seen it so often that I’ve become intrigued about the book. Will probably check this out when it’s available.

Dark Witch by Nora Roberts – This is the first book in a trilogy which sounds quite interesting. I’ve read the Inn Boonsboro trilogy by this author and really enjoyed it. It was miles away from the kind of thing in would normally select, but maybe that was what made it so enjoyable.

I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather this week, with a cold which is making me feel really tired (great excuse for a nice sit down with a cup of tea and a good book).

New To My Shelves This Week:

Everything this week comes courtesy of one library or another. No matter how many books I already have stacked up on my TBR pile, I’m incapable of going to the library just to browse; I ALWAYS come out with something.

Eleanor And Park by Rainbow Rowell – I read Fangirl recently and absolutely loved it. I really enjoyed Landline too, so thought I should check out other works by this author.

The Girl With All The Gifts by M. R. Carey – I stumbled upon this book whilst browsing in the bookshop a few weeks back and kept thinking I would probably get it once I’d read a few of the books on my TBR pile, but recently I’ve read so much positive feedback about it that I didn’t feel like waiting any longer, so I’m looking forward to starting this soon.

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell – The library have really done me proud this time, for look at this wonderful book. I requested this book ages ago, way before publication, and way before I realised it was long listed for the Booker Prize. I think the cover is absolutely wonderful, and can’t wait to see if the story contained within the pages lives up to my expectations.

Books I’ve Reviewed This Week:

Stone Mattress by Margaret Atwood. Gave this one 5 stars because I loved every minute of every short story (and I’m not generally a reader of short stories).

Books That Have Caught My Eye This Week (Must find out more):

Temeraire by Naomi Novik – Mainly because the cover has been redesigned and that caught my eye, then I realised I’d already purchased the e-book, way back when I first had my e-reader, so now my interest is raised again and I really must get around to reading it.

Anarchy by James Treadwell – I actually cannot believe that I missed this book. I read the first book, Advent a while ago. How has it escaped my notice that the sequel is available? I really must get my hands on this book.

Also, the Trees of Reverie Read-A-Thon has just started, (see HERE for more information) so that will be keeping me occupied for the next couple of weeks. I love read-a-thons, and the idea that so many like-minded people from all around the world are all joining together to participate in a reading event. I always end up finding countess books that I must add to my TBR list whilst browsing blogs.

Not a bad week in terms of reading for me. I’ll probably finish Stone Mattress very soon, which has been a wonderful read.  I’m always a little anxious for my next read when I’ve just finished something so good!

New to my shelves this week:

Firstly, my Library Loot, which in a rare turn of events only consists of one book this week.  It is the new Sarah Waters novel, The Paying Guests. I was really pleased to get the email saying this one was available, as I’ve read her previous books and enjoyed them, so I’m looking forward to starting this.

For the first time in I don’t know how long I actually purchased books.  Not just one, but two!

It happened quite out of the blue. I’ve been thinking of reading Throne Of Glass for a while now. Every blog I see has nothing but the highest praise for the series, and I rather feel as though I may be missing out on something. I’ve had the e-book on my Wishlist for a while now, but kept holding back because I have SO many other books to read.
Then I saw it on Twitter that the book was 51p for a short time only. I’ve never moved so fast in my life. I have a feeling that this purchase is going to lead to a few more, but that’s good, isn’t it?

I also bought Before I Go To Sleep as an e-book too.  I’m pretty certain I borrowed this one from the library a couple of times, but somehow never got around to reading it because I had too many other things to read (familiar story!), so now there’s no excuse for not reading it.

Do you ever have one of those weeks when you feel like you haven’t achieved as much as you would like to in terms of reading? I think I’ve had one of those weeks. I’ve read, but not as much as I have in previous weeks while Bout of Books was going on.

New to my shelves this week:

All of the books below are my Library Loot.
I may have said it before, but I’ll repeat myself… I LOVE LIBRARIES. I love them so much that the haul below has been gathered from two different libraries.

Stone Mattress by Margaret Atwood – I was really excited to find this book at the local library. It was the day of publication; I’d been reading about the book online, then decided to call into the library on my way home and this was the first book that caught my eye on the ‘Latest Books’ shelf. I couldn’t believe it was just there, waiting – I thought there would have been a request list for it. Needless to say, it didn’t sit on that shelf for long. Even though I already have at least ten library books out on loan, I bough this one too.

Half Bad by Sally Green – I requested this one a while ago, then saw something called #worldsbiggestbookclub on Twitter, which I’d never heard of before, and realised their September book was going to be this one.

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton – I saw this on an online bookstore’s coming soon’ section a while ago, and was immediately drawn to the cover. When I read what it was about I thought I’d give it a try.

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo – The second in the Grisha trilogy. I thought I would wait a little longer before returning to Alina’s world, but then I loved the ending of the first book so much that I didn’t think I could stand to wait, and so, here it is, just ready for me to read.

The Collected Works Of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin – Saw this one recommended on a blog post on books about books and it really caught my eye, so I was really happy that the library had it and can’t wait to read it.

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch – I don’t think this is out yet, but it sounds like something I might enjoy.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman – I actually saw the trailer for the movie before I even realised it was based on a book. As soon as I discovered this, of course I wanted to know more about the book. I’m always torn between reading the book first or seeing the movie first. Sometimes I find it distracting if I’ve read the book and they make big changes to the story, because I keep thinking ‘it wasn’t like that in the book’.

Events I’ve participated in:

Okay, it’s not strictly an event, but it is something new to me. I signed up to Bloglovin’. I’ve been pondering on whether I should do this for a while, then read a pretty convincing post about how to do it and how it all works.
What initially deterred me was the technicalities involved, for as much as I love using my blog to write about books, I’m not technically minded at all when it comes to computers.
Well, if anyone has the same doubts – IT WAS SO EASY! Please don’t be deterred for as long as I was. In a matter of mere moments I was all signed up and had added various links to my blog so people can follow. I really wish I’d done it sooner.

The first thing I must mention this Sunday is We Were Liars. Technically it’s not a new purchase for this week, but I finished reading it this week and can’t stop thinking about how great it was. After much pondering about how to word my review (it’s SO difficult to do this book justice without giving too much away) I actually managed to get it written, and you can read it by following the link below.

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler.

I picked both those books up at the library, which will give me an incentive to get started on one of them, as the loan is for three weeks and there are definitely other people waiting for We Are All… as it’s been longlisted for the Booker Prize.

And, for my bookish item purchase of the week – I was having a wander around the bookshop the other day and came across some little arrow shaped page markers. They’re in a set of 8, all different colours, and I couldn’t resist getting some, because I’m always trying to mark pages for quotes or memorable passages which I know I’ll want to come back to, so they seemed like a good idea.
