My Read of the Month

The Muse by Jessie Burton.
This read was a totally unexpected surprise. I wasn’t sure what to read next, the book was at the top of my pile and the striking cover caught my eye so I thought I’d give it a go.
And from those very first pages I was totally engrossed. What a great read!

My Read of the Month

Let’s add something new here, I thought to myself.
Maybe highlight a favourite read of the month, I thought.
That was before I went on to have a great start to the reading year and now find myself with an almost impossible choice for my read of the month. Any of the books I’ve listed above are really good.
After much deliberation I’m going to choose…

The Trees by Ali Shaw, because it was the first book of the year to make me cry (just a tiny little bit). The scene in question, well, I guess I should have seen it coming actually but I didn’t, not for a minute. Can’t say more without spoiling the moment and I wouldn’t want to do that.

Beat the Backlist

My total for this challenge is currently 3 books read. So far I’ve read:

Cell by Stephen King
Golden Hill by Francis Spufford
The Trees by Ali Shaw

Goodreads

I’ve set myself a low target for this year of 20 books. So far I’ve read 3 book.

Goals

I’ve actually really taken to my main reading challenge for the year, Beat the Backlist, and have read 3 Books so far from my backlist.

I also managed to post reviews for each book very soon after completing the book.

I feel like I’ve updated fairly regularly for the first month of this new year.

So concludes January’s Reading Review. See you again next month.

Reading Resolutions 2017

In 2017 I will be participating in the Goodreads challenge, as I’ve done that one for a number of years, although I’m setting a fairly modest target to start with. I’m also joining in with the challenge listed below, and creating a list of Reading Resolutions again.
This is just a general list of reading hopes and goals for the coming year.
I’ll continue my monthly progress updates.

General Goals

  • To participate in as many reading events and readathons as I can and keep my blog regularly updated with progress.
  • To TRY and make a better effort to stop neglecting the books I already own.
  • To read a variety of genres, but to carry on indulging my love of fantasy/dystopia/post apocalypse stories.
  • Read a little more Non Fiction
  • To give an audio book a try.
  • To keep a monthly update post going to record how well I’m doing in keeping to my goals in terms of blogging and reading.

Beat the Backlist 2017

Overview

The Beat the Backlist Challenge is hosted over at NovelKnight and is focused on knocking off titles that have been on your TBR for a while, or even ones that get pushed aside for new releases. Over the years, and especially this one, we’ve noticed that new releases are getting more and more attention while our TBRs continue to grow. While we LOVE new releases, we also want to show some of those older titles love too.

This challenge doesn’t have levels or a set number of books you need to read.

YOU set your own reading goal. YOU pick the books. YOU read at your own pace.

The idea here isn’t to make this a competition, but to help you shrink your TBR with a bunch of other people doing the same thing.

Guidelines

THIS CHALLENGE WILL RUN FROM JANUARY 1ST TO DECEMBER 31ST, 2017.

That’s right. You have an ENTIRE YEAR to complete your goal.

BOOKS MUST BE RELEASED PRIOR TO 2017
(this challenge isn’t for new releases)

That’s it! Those are the only guidelines!

Potential Reads

Cell – Stephen King
Golden Hill – Francis Spufford
The Trees – Ali Smith
Feed – Mira Grant
Feedback – Mira Grant
Needful Things – Stephen King
Misery – Stephen King
The Cuckoo’s Calling – Robert Galbraith
The Aeronaut’s Windlass – Jim Butcher
Life After Life – Kate Atkinson
The Goldfinch – Donna Tartt
Red Rising – Pierce Brown

I am setting myself a fairly low target for my only other reading challenge this year, the Goodreads challenge, because I always choose such long books that it takes me a while to complete them. For Goodreads I’m aiming for 20 books, so for the Beat the Backlist challenge I’ll aim for 8 books to start with, but hopefully I’ll manage more, because I really do want to stop neglecting books that have been on my TBR list for ages.
