Bout of Books 22 (May 2018) – Final Summary

After a couple of really slow reading days I had a great time this afternoon reading A Time of Dread. I managed to read 100 pages and I can’t wait to read the rest over the next couple of days, because I have to know how the story ends.

Number of pages I’ve read today: 100

Total number of pages I’ve read: 358

I usually set a few general goals for the readathon (Original goals posted HERE), so I could end up reading anything at all.
As always I’ve enjoyed the daily updating on my blog, and visiting new blogs and finding out what other people have been reading.
I don’t think I read as much as I would have liked to, but I still very much enjoyed participating in Bout of Books.

Thank you to everyone who visited my blog during the event. I hope everyone had a great week of reading.

Time Devoted to Reading

As much as I can manage each day.

My Goals

  • To start a new read. I’m currently going between a Poirot short story, The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock and A Time of Dread. I have no idea which one I’ll end up choosing, or whether it will be something completely different.
  • Keep track of my reading progress via daily blog updates
  • Visit other blogs and comment regularly

Books to Read

  • At least one of the books from my list above, maybe…

Updates

Monday

Bout of Books time once again and I cannot wait to share the next week of reading with everyone taking part in the event. Of the potential reads I mentioned above I think I’m going to try A Time of Dread by John Gwynne first. I’ve never read anything by him before, so here’s to a book by a new-to-me author.

Tuesday (Monday’s Progress)

Looks like I picked a good book for my first read of Bout of Books.
I love discovering an author I enjoy and then finding out they’ve written books that are already out there so I can add yet more to my TBR list.

Number of pages I’ve read today:   104
Total number of pages I’ve read:   104

Wednesday (Tuesday’s progress)

Never one to break with tradition, yesterday was the day where I read very little. There’s always at least one day during the read-a-thon when I just don’t seem to manage much.

Number of pages I’ve read today:   0
Total number of pages I’ve read:   104

Thursday (Wednesday’s progress)

Managed another good chunk of reading this afternoon. It was even warm enough to sit outside reading for a while.
Am really enjoying A Time of Dread, and am already thinking about adding the Faithful and the Fallen series to my never-ending TBR list.
I noticed that the library is due to get a copy of Wrath of Empire by Brian McClellan but I doubt I’ll get that in time to start it before Bout of Books ends. Another book that I’m really looking forward to.

Number of pages I’ve read today:   78
Total number of pages I’ve read:   182

Friday (Thursday’s progress)

56 pages read today. I wish I’d had time to read more.
It’s supposed to be nice over the weekend, so hopefully I’ll have plenty of time to read then. I wonder if I’ll manage to finish my book before the end of Bout of Books?

Number of pages I’ve read today:   56
Total number of pages I’ve read:   238

Saturday (Friday’s progress)

Another slow reading day today.

Number of pages I’ve read today:   0
Total number of pages I’ve read:   238

Sunday (Saturday’s progress)

I don’t even know how today has gone by so quickly without more reading. I few a very few pages. I’m going to try my best for the final day tomorrow.

Number of pages I’ve read today:   20
Total number of pages I’ve read:   258

Monday (Sunday’s progress and final thoughts)

Bout of Books 21 (January 2018) – Final Summary

Bout of Books

The latest Bout of Books is over, and I had a good final day of reading.
I’m at the point where I can’t tear myself away from Into the Drowning Deep, I just keeping saying ‘one more chapter’, ‘one more page’, but then I don’t want the book to end either.

Number of pages I’ve read today: 100

Total number of pages I’ve read: 660

I usually set general readathon goals (Original goals posted HERE).
As always updating my blog daily and visiting other blogs has been an enjoyable part of the readathon.
I managed to complete one book and start another, and I even found time to write and post a Top Ten Tuesday entry in the middle of the readathon, which is a first.

Thank you to everyone who visited and commented on my blog during the event. I hope everyone had a great week of reading.

As always I’ll be using this blog for the majority of my updates during the read-a-thon, but you can also find me on Twitter.

Time Devoted to Reading

I’ll say my usual half an hour as a minimum, but hopefully a LOT more.

My Goals

  • To finish reading at least one book
  • And maybe start another one
  • Keep track of my reading progress via daily blog updates
  • Visit other blogs and comment regularly

Books to Read

  • The Christmas Secret by Karen Swan
  • Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
  • Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

Updates

Monday

What better way to start a new year of reading than by joining in with Bout of Books? I do love a good read-a-thon, so I’m looking forward to the next week of reading and blogging.

Tuesday (Monday’s Progress)

I’m reading The Christmas Secret by Karen Swan. My festive reading has spilled over into the new year – oops! It’s got a very festive looking cover but so far the story isn’t actually overly Christmassy, so it’s one to read at any time of year. It’s set in December, but that’s about it so far.
Oh, and I am enjoying it; it’s a different theme from the type of book I’d usually pick up.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  100
Total number of pages I’ve read:  100

Wednesday (Tuesday’s progress)

I haven’t managed to read as much today. I wanted to write a post for Top Ten Tuesday, and I think it’s the first time I’ve done that during Bout of Books.
As you may see from that post I’ve suddenly developed a really strong urge to read about killer mermaids. Am going to try really hard to finish my current read before picking up something new though.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  50
Total number of pages I’ve read:  150

Thursday (Wednesday’s progress)

I finished a book!
Don’t know how I managed it but I read so much today. I don’t think I’ve managed 200 pages in one day in years. I just couldn’t seem to put my book (The Christmas Secret) down, and I’m also really looking forward to starting Into the Drowning Deep.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  200
Total number of pages I’ve read:  350

Friday (Thursday’s progress)

I’m really enjoying Into the Drowning Deep. The thing is, I don’t want to read it too fast because I want to make it last, but I also want to know who will survive and what’s going to happen to all these characters.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  88
Total number of pages I’ve read:  438

Saturday (Friday’s progress)

I didn’t have much opportunity to read today, so I snatched a few times where I could. There’s always time tomorrow though, right?

Number of pages I’ve read today:  46
Total number of pages I’ve read:  484

Sunday (Saturday’s progress)

Such a good reading afternoon and evening. Into the Drowning Deep is SO GOOD!
The mermaids have made their presence known for the first time and… it was so tense. I imagine the crew of this ship are about to get into real trouble, and I can’t wait to get back to my book to find out what happens next!
Who knew mermaids could be so scary?!

Number of pages I’ve read today:  76
Total number of pages I’ve read:  560

Monday (Sunday’s progress and final thoughts)

Final Summary posted HERE.

Bout of Books 20 (August 2017) – Final Summary

Bout of Books

Bout of Books is over already. Doesn’t the read-a-thon week just fly by?

So, how did you get on in your final day of reading?
I managed the most pages I’ve read all week. I really hoped I’d make 500 pages in total and I completed 200 altogether, giving me a final total of 550. I read so slowly these days I’m amazed I managed that many, but my book is very good and the weekend was fairly quiet, so what better way to spend it than lost in a good book.

Number of pages I’ve read today: 200

Total number of pages I’ve read: 550

I set fairly general goals for the read-a-thon (original goals posted HERE), and managed to keep up with most of them.  I even managed to get my Darien review written and posted during the event, which is a first for me!
As always I’ve enjoyed being around on my blog (almost) daily. I don’t think I’ll ever manage to update every day, but I’ve managed to keep regular track of what I’ve read.
And I think that’s about all from this final Bout of Books update.

Thank you to everyone who visited my blog during the event. I hope everyone had a great week of reading.

Bout of Books
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. Talk about cutting it fine; I had no idea Bout of Books was starting next week. I’m really glad it is though, as I have some good reads lined up on my TBR pile and I can’t wait to start them. Having a read-a-thon to participate in at the same time is just an added bonus!

As always I’ll be using this blog for the majority of my updates during the read-a-thon, but you can also find me on Twitter.

Time Devoted to Reading

As much as possible.

My Goals

  • Carry on reading Darien by C. F. Iggulden, and hopefully finish it
  • Maybe even get my review posted on the blog
  • Start reading The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams (because I’ve wanted to read it for some time now).
  • Keep track of my reading progress via daily blog updates
  • Visit other blogs and comment regularly

Books to Read

  • Darien by C. F. Iggulden
  • The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams

Updates

Monday

It’s Bout of Books time again. I’m hoping to settle down with my book this afternoon so will update on the day’s progress tomorrow.
Happy reading everyone!

Tuesday (Monday’s Progress)

Had a great afternoon of reading Darien. Talk about a page turner! It’s all action at the moment, which made it really hard to put the book down. I’m really enjoying the first book of this new series and will definitely look out for the next one.
The only downside is I can’t imagine it will take me much longer to finish the book and I don’t really want it to end!

Number of pages I’ve read today:  100
Total number of pages I’ve read:  100

Wednesday (Tuesday’s progress)

Completed Darien yesterday. Can I have the next book already please?! I wonder if it will follow the same characters and their stories, or whether it will focus on another area and another set of people?
I even managed to complete my review and get it posted to the blog, here, and now I’m going to have a look at The Ninth Rain.
I’m pretty sure I saw a really thorough review of this book somewhere online which detailed the background of this new fantasy world I’m about to enter. I like having a bit of info before I start reading…

Number of pages I’ve read today:  52
Total number of pages I’ve read:  152

Thursday (Wednesday’s progress)

There’s always one day isn’t there? That day when you just don’t manage to get any reading done. Well, this was mine, so hopefully I’ll have more to report next time I check in.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  0
Total number of pages I’ve read:  152

Friday (Thursday’s progress)

Much better day for reading.
I’ve never read anything by Jen Williams before; she’s a new-to-me author, and The Ninth Rain is very good so far.
I can already tell that Vintage is going to be a new favourite character, so I really hope she makes it to the end of the book. What usually happens when I find a character I really like is they meet some awful demise before the book reaches it’s conclusion. Here’s hoping that doesn’t happen this time.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  65
Total number of pages I’ve read:  217

Saturday (Friday’s progress)

Oh dear, not the best day for reading today, but at least I did manage a (very) few pages.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  33
Total number of pages I’ve read:  250

Sunday (Saturday’s progress)

Had another good reading session and managed 100 pages; I didn’t think I’d manage that again before the end of the read-a-thon.
I wonder if I can make or pass 500 pages this time around?! I’m quite a slow reader so I’m not sure, but I’m going to try.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  100
Total number of pages I’ve read:  350

Monday (Sunday’s progress and final thoughts)

Final Summary posted HERE.

Bout of Books 19 (May 2017) – Final Summary

Bout of Books

Bout of Books is over, and I had a good final day of reading.

I read 150 pages of Apple Tree Yard, which is the most I’ve managed to read in one go all week, so that’s quite a good end to the readathon for me.  I seem to read so much slower these days, I don’t know why.

Number of pages I’ve read today: 150

Total number of pages I’ve read: 375

I always set fairly general goals for the readathon (Original goals posted HERE).

I enjoy the ritual of daily blog updates during the readathon, and managed to (mostly) keep up with them this time around.
I don’t think I read quite as much as I would have liked to, but I did manage to complete one book and find myself something new to read, which was good as I was in one of those moods where I didn’t have a clue what to pick up next. Usually I’ll have the TBR pile in some kind of order with at least a little idea what I fancy once I’ve finished my current read. I hope this isn’t the beginning of the dreaded Reading Slump.

Thank you to everyone who visited my blog during the event. I hope everyone had a great week of reading.

Time Devoted to Reading

Half an hour per day, minimum. Maximum? Well, there’s no limit really.

My Goals

  • To carry on reading The Aeronaut’s Windlass
  • To maybe start a new read (but as yet I have no idea what that will be)

Books to Read

  • ???

Updates

Monday

Bout of Books time!  I’m hoping to get some reading time in this afternoon.

Tuesday (Monday’s Progress)

Had a decent afternoon of reading and managed to get through 50 pages.  I think I’ll probably finish The Aeronaut’s Windlass before the end of the readathon, but at the moment I have NO idea what I fancy reading next.  Hm…

Number of pages I’ve read today:  50
Total number of pages I’ve read:  50

Wednesday (Tuesday’s progress)

Not such a great reading for reading today, but at least I managed a few pages.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  10
Total number of pages I’ve read:  60

Thursday (Wednesday’s progress)

I’ve had so much to do today that I haven’t managed to read a single page.  I don’t think I’ve ever read so little during Bout of Books before!

Number of pages I’ve read today:  0
Total number of pages I’ve read:  60

Friday (Thursday’s progress)

At last, I have some reading progress to report. I finished reading The Aeronaut’s Windlass this afternoon, and really enjoyed it. Hopefully it won’t be too long before I have a review up on the blog.
And I finally settled on something new to read, based on nothing other than of all the library books I currently have checked out there is now a request on Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty, so I’d better get started on that as it will have to go back.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  65
Total number of pages I’ve read:  125

Saturday (Friday’s progress)

Another pretty slow day of reading.  At least I have the weekend to look forward to.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  0
Total number of pages I’ve read:  125

Sunday (Saturday’s progress)

Managed a lovely long reading session today, which saw me through the first 100 pages of Apple Tree Yard. I missed this when it was on tv, so have little idea what to expect as the book synopsis was pretty vague. Hopefully I’ll be able to read for a long time on the final Bout of Books day and really get into my book.
How is everyone else doing so far?

Number of pages I’ve read today:  100
Total number of pages I’ve read:  225

Monday (Sunday’s progress and final thoughts)

Bout of Books 18 (January 2017) – Final Summary

Bout of Books 18

Bout of Books is over, and I had a really good final day of reading.

After finishing Cell, which I didn’t expect to do, I picked out another book to start, Golden Hill by Francis Spufford. I settled down to read and by the end of the day had gone through the first 100 pages. I stopped where I did because 100 pages is a nice number and the scene that had just concluded had me laughing out loud and I wanted to savour it for a while. Can’t wait to get back to reading more today.

Number of pages I’ve read today: 100

Total number of pages I’ve read: 573

I always set fairly general goals for the readathon (Original goals posted HERE).

As usual I’ve enjoyed the daily blog updates and learning about the books others have been reading during the event.
I managed to complete one book and start another, and made (almost) daily progress updates so it‘s been a decent start to a new reading year.Thank you to everyone who visited and commented on my blog during the event. I hope everyone had a great week of reading.

A new year, aTBR list with an endless list of (hopefully) great books? Sounds like the perfect time for a read-a-thon to me!
Yes, it’s Bout of Books time once again, and what better way is there to go into a new year of reading?

Books to Read

Cell by Stephen King

Updates

Monday

Bout of Books time again!  I’m looking forward to some quality reading time today, and can’t wait to start my first read of the year.

Tuesday (Monday’s Progress)

Managed to spend a lovely afternoon reading yesterday, and made a good start with Cell.  I wanted to read this book because I saw the film not long ago and while I enjoyed it, it left me with questions, so I thought I’d see how the book tells the story, and whether it gives explanations to the things I was wondering about.  So far, so good.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  75
Total number of pages I’ve read:  75

Wednesday (Tuesday’s progress)

This book must be good because I managed to read over 100 pages yesterday.  I can’t remember the last time that happened recently.  At the end of last year my reading pace was really slow and it seemed to takes ages to finish a book.

Number of pages I’ve read today:
Total number of pages I’ve read:

Thursday (Wednesday’s progress)

I’ve come across some great scenes in Cell which I wish had made it into the film, although there’s been at least one character’s demise which was pretty disgusting. At this point I think I’m enjoying the book slightly more than the film. Can’t wait to see what the ending is like.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  100
Total number of pages I’ve read:  300

Friday (Thursday’s progress)

It had to happen, that there would come the day when I didn’t get chance to read anything at all. There’s always at least one during the readathon.
Still, at least that gives me plenty more story to enjoy, and hopefully I’ll have chance to read much more tomorrow.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  0
Total number of pages I’ve read:  300

Saturday (Friday’s progress)

Another pretty slow day of reading.  At least I have the weekend to look forward to.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  20
Total number of pages I’ve read:  320

Sunday (Saturday’s progress)

Well here’s something unexpected… I finished my first read of 2017 during Bout of Books. I had such a great afternoon with plenty of time to devote to reading Cell. As the story went on it became one of those books I really didn’t want to put down because I had to know how it was all going to turn out.
And now I know.
And I’m pretty sad to have reached the end because I could have read so much more about those characters.

Am now off to have a look through my endless TBR list/pile and find something new to start for the final day of the readathon.

Number of pages I’ve read today:  153
Total number of pages I’ve read:  473

Monday (Sunday’s progress and final thoughts)
